Choosing themes is the first step in planning a baby shower. Or, you may choose not to have a theme at all. However, having a theme for your shower should make the party entertaining, fun, and a memorable experience.

Before picking one, decide on what your guests would find enjoyable. Put yourself in their shoes and think about what you would want to do if you were the guests. Themes for your shower are time savers by providing a focus on the party.

The theme you decide on will determine everything else about the baby shower. The location, whom to invite, what kind of decorations, games, food and beverages.

You also need to determine if the shower will be before the baby arrives or after.

Baby Shower Invitation – Wording Tips

The wording for a baby shower invitation is similar to that of most invitations, in that it addresses the who, what, when, and where. You’ll want to let your invitees know the name of the expectant mother, the date and time of the baby shower, directions or the address of the shower, the contact info for whom guests should R.S.V.P., and if applicable, any baby registry the mother may have and any instructions for gifts or activities. You may also want to include the name of the baby and its gender, if you know what it is and would like to share.

Aside from the details of the shower, it is common to include something cute and clever in the body of the invitation, such as a small poem or verse. Before deciding on your wording, you may want to pick out your invitations so you can match the wording to the style of the shower invitations.

If you already know the gender of the baby, you can pick out a gender specific shower invitation, and include a phrase or verse to match. For a girl, you might try our It’s A Girl Ribbon Baby Shower Invitation or our Baby Girl Icons Baby Shower Invitation with the following wording:

A Baby Girl is On Her Way,
Join Us For Her Mommy’s Special Day!

Or,

Little fingers, little toes,

This is too big and important a job to do by yourself, so I would recommend recruiting someone that you trust and can depend on to help you get it done right. Your recruit will be the proverbial “fly-on-the-wall” observing and recording every bit of detail possible that the mommy-to-be can use for her baby shower safari thank-you cards.

Your recruit will need to have at a minimum a notepad and pen. A camera might come in handy too, but keep in mind she is not the cameraperson. You should have someone else dedicated to taking pictures.

Using the guest list, write the name of each guest at the top of the page of the notebook – 1 guest name per page. This will make it easier to take notes on each guest.

Have a Sharpie and some Scotch tape handy. Write the name of the guest onto a piece of tape, and stick it onto their gift. During the gift opening, it will be easier to match the gift to the person that gave it.

What to record?

• Keep track of who gave what gift
• Record snippets of conversation
• Did someone tell a funny joke?
• Who brought dessert?
• Who dressed for the theme?
• Was it a potluck? Who brought what food item?
• Was there singing?
• Dancing?
• Who won the baby shower games?
• Who helped with the decorations?

At the end of the baby shower safari, hand the notebook over to the mommy-to-be. This record will help her recall all the fond memories from her shower, and be the inspiration for her to personalize each thank-you card and fill it with her words of gratitude.
